Introduction
The world has lost a strong voice for peace and reconciliation. It was with immense sadness that I received the news of Kofi Annan’s passing on August 18, 2018. The former UN Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate died at 80 after a brief illness.
Kofi Annan lived a remarkable life dedicated to making the world a better place. I had the honour of witnessing firsthand the impact of his efforts. He was not only a global statesman but also an unusually warm and compassionate person.
A Gathering of Global Leaders: The Elders
In July 2017, I attended a dinner with The Elders in Cape Town, South Africa, marking their 10th anniversary and the launch of the #WalkTogether campaign ahead of Nelson Mandela’s 100th anniversary in 2018. During the dinner, I had the privilege of sitting next to Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, with whom I shared many meaningful conversations about her extraordinary work in global health and sustainable development. Her insights and reflections were both inspiring and thought-provoking, making the evening truly unforgettable. Before the event, my family and I had the privilege of staying with Sir Richard Branson at Mont Rochelle, his vineyard in Franschhoek. This gathering, hosted by Sir Richard and Virgin Unite, was a testament to his dedication to global peace and justice.
Although Kofi could not attend due to peace talks in Myanmar, his wife, Nana Annan, represented him. Nana’s warmth and grace mirrored that of Kofi’s, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.

Kofi was a prominent leader of The Elders, which included figures like:
Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland: First woman and youngest Prime Minister of Norway.

Former leaders of Chile, Mexico, Finland, Switzerland, and South Africa.
A Personal Connection
